Poem: Losing

another street
another chance
yet she runs away
'cause it's all she's ever known
all she's ever loved has perished
no safe ground to land on
and her wings flutter with madness
*
no matter how familiar a name can sound
no matter where home can be felt
it all disappears, even if guarded
the surface of our hearts torn
from all the shakes we let in
this man-made suffering
can make a stone of the heart
*
losing is a game of the wind
the speed at which it takes
the blows it leaves behind
the chills it sets down the skin
there are galaxies hidden in the stories we write
and some words too, may lose their meaning
but in doing so what do they gain?
*
Yesterday I watched a movie called Short term 12; and since lately I've been feeling like I'm losing everything and everyone, this poem just poured out.

  1. Fortunate those who have not felt this way. Life sadly is more about loss than gain.

  5. Oh Natasha, I so know what you feel. We are suffering alienation all over the world. Everything, moral, feelings, security, history, all of a sudden seem adrift.
When WW3 no longer seems an impossibility, we are bound to feel rudderless.
    Well written.

  7. You have articulated well the painful desolation of "no safe ground to land on" that comes from loss. I hope that we gain peace of mind from writing down etchings from the galaxies...

  8. This disarray of feelings, words is familiar to many who had experienced the changes in life...and everyone brought something new from this challenge...main thing - don't lose yourself, your words, your truth....

  9. Leaving, running can be very tempting when loss feels overwhelming and the ground seems to shift from under your feet. You have expressed your pain with very powerful and beautiful images - 'her wings flutter with madness' is probably my favorite.

  12. Your piece makes me feel my age--a good thing I think-but it does remind me that growing older is about loss--and sometimes I feel its wind on my back--like Kerry said--a haunting poem

  13. This is beautifully written and universally experienced. I especially admire: "wings flutter with madness", "this man-made suffering can make a stone of the heart", and "losing is a game of the wind." Hang in there, kiddo, up ahead lie people and events more wonderful than you could ever dream!!!! After tears, the rainbow!

  19. I felt this piece... (well written)
Autumn seems to be the time for shedding what we do not need... to carry in our winter... to gather only what will help us survive and blossom in the spring. I suppose it's bitter-sweet, but, I believe it is carried on the current of joy :-)

Losing is hard, but we must do all we can to never let our hearts harden too much. Very well written and expressive. I liked reading this very much :)
