Poem: Just be simple

you watch the rain pour over the streets
from the comfort of your room
with an eternal question on your mind
»why isn't this simple?«
as we keep repeating the same creed
high on lust and greed
with one leg chasing the future
and another stuck in the past
how we've learned to skip the now
drunk on appearances and value of money
a single stroke of a drop turns clear into muddy
still we manage to wake up not in horror
at our own freak show
everybody knows the shades of loneliness
and how they creep among us
as we stand like silhouettes of trees in the mist
we devote our energy to the things
that keep our minds sane, in this insane game
reaching new definitions of normality
it takes strength to be gentle and kind
if it hurts, it means it matters and you're doing it right
and you know the comfort of getting lost
- it helps you find yourself
and when you gaze high above yourself you see
the whole universe smiling back at you

  1. A splendid reflection of life. I was a part of the poem as you rode through the human freak shows and the insane games. And how well you ended it. One of the best poems Ive read today, which I expected too. :)

    my fav lines :

'with one leg chasing the future
and another stuck in the past
how we've learned to skip the now'

    too good. !! :)

  2. Hi Natasa...so true that it seems that if we reflect on life we find it is not simple. I like your metaphoric poetic anguage: "high on lust and greed with one leg facing the future and another stuck in the past." Yes, it takes strength to be gentle and kind, and I think you've made a good point about if it hurts, you're doing it right! A good message for me to take to heart.

  3. smiles...i like the thought of the universe smiling back to us....it matters because it hurts...sometimes, indeed...and the comfort of getting lost...ha. i like that...life really isnt that simple...but we can flow in simplicity and not confound it all the more...

  4. I like this poem very much. The unexamined life is not worth living said Socrates. It is when you feel nothing you have problems. Empathy is thin on the ground.

  5. a very thoughtful and incisive analysis.though many would not reach your benevolent conclusions and rather be mired in a choice of nightmares.

  6. So many truths in this poem...I especially love the part about how we've learned to skip the now. It seems everyone is either living in their past or worried about their future. Staying present is a challenge. Beautiful writing!

  9. Natasha, you really tell it like it is, one leg in the future, the other in past while we skip (insanely) right over now... Now is refuge, now is where we can see the whole universe smiling back at us. Love the pic too, and the way the words clearly come from a higher consciousness, higher perspective... pointing the way of things, yes, but with a world of compassion in them.

  11. Wonderful message. I loved the reference of one leg running for future and the other one still stuck in the past... how true is that.
    Very well-penned.

  15. Natasa,

This is a splendid poem which contains the most wonderful phrases and lines. I would have to quote your entire poem, as it was so impressive.
I like the honesty as one reflects upon the ups and downs of a life...

  21. This is strong, masculine, aphoristic. I love the poem and the message, but have you been watching Schopenhauer The Rock Opera
